Online teaching

During the covid19 pandemic, a lot of teaching was online. I prepared a series of summaries for students on the courses that I have covered with them.

What do students think of my teaching?

At the UPV students evaluate their professors and are even allowed to leave an anonymous comment about them, which we later receive. Last year I checked for the first time these comments and I was very happy to read them.

I have pasted them here (after a translation into English with deepl), untouched, with no edits etc from my side, of course. I have deleted the group numbers etc. You can find the originals in Spanish here.

Why am I doing this? Because I really feel proud about that I seem to have achieved.

  • Nowadays, it’s rare to find teachers with the initiative and passion of Mr. Amaro. While other teachers of the same subject devote themselves to showing that they know mathematics in front of us, Mr. Amaro makes sure we don’t just memorize formulas to say we know something without actually understanding it.
Mr. Amaro doesn’t use audiovisual content, but who would ever think of using a PowerPoint presentation to teach mathematics, not to mention writing in mathematical language, which no one understands.
Never has a teacher told me this: “If you don’t understand things, it’s not because you’re dumb, it’s because I’m doing my job wrong.”
    Congratulations, Mr. Amaro.

  • Mr. Pau, in addition to teaching mathematics, teaches us to think and have critical thinking, making students question principles that were once considered absolute but that now, from our point of view, make us think and reflect to reach the correct and appropriate conclusion.
  • He teaches his classes well and demands the use of language according to the situation, using formal language. He respects the students and wants not only our learning but also our general education and knowledge that are not part of the subject to improve.
  • His demands help to handle the subject as it should be.
  • Comment 6:
    – He provides exercises.
    – Great knowledge of the subject and relates it to real-world applications.
  • He strives to make us understand things, not just stuff more facts into our heads.
  • Because he educates as he should.
  • He should be congratulated for his command of the subject.
  • He is a good teacher, he knows his subject, but above all, he knows about the subject he teaches and makes an effort to teach us to think critically and question things.
  • Mr. Amaro is a bit of a critic because he doesn’t use digital devices and is a bit tough, but he is a teacher who tells you things as they are, and that is transparent, realistic, and teaches as a teacher should, with discipline and order, top-notch.
  • He strives for us to understand the subject, even offering extra classes.
  • His dedication to teaching goes beyond the classes, as he gives talks and auxiliary classes in a completely altruistic way.
  • High involvement in what he does.
  • I think he motivates students and encourages them to understand the subject and not just learn to systematically solve the problem.
  • He is like a Ferrari engine installed in a light four-wheeler; a teacher who far exceeds expectations, although the subject feels too small for him.
  • He masters the subject he teaches, and his classes are very interesting, the best teacher I’ve had.
  • At first, I thought he was a bad teacher, but little by little, I started to like him more, and I began to understand him better.
  • I believe that, in some aspects, he sparks motivation in students to understand concepts on their own, beyond what is taught in class.
  • I really like his teaching style; it seems like he cares more about teaching his students something than just giving a lecture.
  • You can tell he knows the subject he teaches, but I don’t like the disorganization when presenting the syllabus, as well as the lack of material in handouts.
  • He manages to convey motivation towards the subject thanks to his passion for what he teaches, and thanks to him, we understand the syllabus instead of memorizing it. The knowledge we acquire endures clearly.
  • He genuinely cares more that the students truly learn the subject.
  • He is a teacher who manages to spark interest in the subject and offers different methods and points of view. You can tell that he wants all his students to feel comfortable asking questions and resolves all the doubts we have, besides making time to solve any question.
  • He dedicates a lot of time and effort so that his students can understand the subject. Additionally, he offers extra talks, using his spare time to develop his students’ passion for the subject.
  • He is a teacher who dedicates himself to TEACHING concepts, making sure that students truly understand them. He fights against the current system of education based on memorizing formulas and concepts.
  • A very dedicated teacher with an excellent command of the subject. His classes are very interesting.
  • I believe this teacher has shown that he has a genuine interest in us learning mathematics and thinking on our own compared to others. Besides, whenever we have needed extra lessons outside of class hours, he has offered to give them and has helped us develop our passion for physics with some talks at the IMM.
  • He ensures we deeply understand the syllabus. It’s not just about rote memorization like with other teachers of this subject, but he helps us approach every problem rationally. In summary, he helps us develop our critical thinking skills.
  • One of the few teachers who tries to fulfill the role of the ideal teacher. His only concern is our learning, and I value that greatly. Unfortunately, due to certain situations, he cannot adapt to the lecture program of the math subject. There should be more teachers like him.
  • One of the few teachers who listens to our suggestions and looks out for our well-being, also trying to give everything, although he cannot do more because of the programming.
  • The man’s a machine.
  • He gets deeply involved in the subject, even gives talks about astrophysics, offers extra classes, and brings Nobel laureates… This is the way!
  • The teacher has fought to rescue the failure of other teachers in the subject and share the material in the best possible way, promoting knowledge beyond what’s taught in class.
  • It’s a privilege to attend Mr. Amaro’s classes because, despite not having a strict syllabus, you learn to master everything he teaches, and he cares about making the subject easier to understand. It may be due to this that, to answer every question and resolve every doubt, the time hasn’t always been enough, but we appreciate the effort to make us learn and teach us beyond just a textbook.
  • Mr. Amaro has managed to spark curiosity in his students and has encouraged us to reject complacency. Not only has he taught us how to do the exercises, but he also encourages us to ask why things are the way they are. He applies mathematics to the aerospace field, motivating me to love the subject. It’s worth noting that Mr. Amaro is willing to invest his hours in giving extra classes, tutoring, or review sessions so that we can reinforce the concepts we’re being taught, which are not unique to just a few students but are open to everyone.
  • He is a teacher who ensures that the knowledge acquired endures over time, as he strives for us to understand the basics from the beginning. He transmits an unrivaled passion for the subject and provides classroom experiences and extracurricular activities that are unique for the students.
